Missed Days: 5

Last week I was a chaperone for the fifth graders of Meadow Homes for outdoor school at Camp Arroyo. Camp Arroyo is located just south of Livermore, CA.

The Camp Arroyo Dining Hall and to the right is Cresta Blanca, a huge rock that is shown in later pictures.

A view from the dining hall on the cabins. The cabins are made environmentally friendly and are placed to be most energy efficient with the sun.

This is a picture taken on the 3 mile Cresta Blanca hike. This picture demonstrates water erosion.

These are the leaves of a Bay Laurel tree which are common in California. It was raining about most of the week and part of the time in our hike.

This is Cresta Blanca up close a little bit. There was a massive mudslide in the early 1900's that was said to produce a sound that could be heard from San Francisco.

After reaching Cresta Blanca we hike up even further on this giant hill which overlooks both Camp Arroyo on it's right and a lake on it's left.

This is a picture of a dam and an old farm that was once used before Camp Arroyo was established. We hiked down there our last day of camp and found a funny looking barn owl inside the house just staring at us.

I wanted to have a small variety of different portraits, I started out with influential people that I personally liked and went on from there. There really isn't much variety of emotion, but I didn't think it was as important. I really like all 10 of these portraits a lot though.

Writing Assignment

Andy Goldsworthy is a british sculptor, photographer and environmentalist. He makes land art made of natural things like wood and he puts them in urban settings. He currently lives and works in Scotland although he has built many sculptures around the world including San Francisco. His art doesn't intentionally advocate for environmentalism but it does make the land look pretty and he does use products found in nature. His art also isn't meant to last, he often builds his projects by the water which quickly deteriorates his work. Some have said that if students realize that we are interconnected with the natural environment, they can begin to use their art as a tool to increase awareness of environmental problems.
Ansel Adams was an american photographer and environmentalist. He took black and white photographs of the American West including Yosemite National Park which he is best known for. He had exceptional clarity and depth in his photographs. He was said to be a "visionary figure in natural photography and wilderness preservation"and He was often seen as an environmental and folk hero and a symbol of the American West.
James Cameron is a Canadian film director and environmentalist. His work includes such movies as The Terminator, Titanic, and Avatar. Avatar was one of first and most popular movies shot in 3D. It is made up almost entirely of computer-generated animation. Avatar is about a group of native people who are attacked by humans with a lot of technology who want to rape their forest for natural resources. This is supposed to be like the ultimate environmentalist movie. I just realized that it's kind of ironic that this movie stands for nature when the entire movie was made up of Computer generated animation! Orson Scott Card, one of the greatest contemporary authors characterized Cameron as selfish and cruel. Which is just not cool.

Romeo& Juliet

The Individual Versus Society
Much of Romeo and Juliet involves the lovers’ struggles against public and social institutions that either explicitly or implicitly oppose the existence of their love. Such structures range from the concrete to the abstract: families and the placement of familial power in the father; law and the desire for public order; religion; and the social importance placed on masculine honor. These institutions often come into conflict with each other. The importance of honor, for example, time and again results in brawls that disturb the public peace.
