Writing Assignment

Andy Goldsworthy is a british sculptor, photographer and environmentalist. He makes land art made of natural things like wood and he puts them in urban settings. He currently lives and works in Scotland although he has built many sculptures around the world including San Francisco. His art doesn't intentionally advocate for environmentalism but it does make the land look pretty and he does use products found in nature. His art also isn't meant to last, he often builds his projects by the water which quickly deteriorates his work. Some have said that if students realize that we are interconnected with the natural environment, they can begin to use their art as a tool to increase awareness of environmental problems.
Ansel Adams was an american photographer and environmentalist. He took black and white photographs of the American West including Yosemite National Park which he is best known for. He had exceptional clarity and depth in his photographs. He was said to be a "visionary figure in natural photography and wilderness preservation"and He was often seen as an environmental and folk hero and a symbol of the American West.
James Cameron is a Canadian film director and environmentalist. His work includes such movies as The Terminator, Titanic, and Avatar. Avatar was one of first and most popular movies shot in 3D. It is made up almost entirely of computer-generated animation. Avatar is about a group of native people who are attacked by humans with a lot of technology who want to rape their forest for natural resources. This is supposed to be like the ultimate environmentalist movie. I just realized that it's kind of ironic that this movie stands for nature when the entire movie was made up of Computer generated animation! Orson Scott Card, one of the greatest contemporary authors characterized Cameron as selfish and cruel. Which is just not cool.

  1. love the writing and the reaction to the avatar film is very insightful, great deeper thinking, and very mature for a high school student.
